Sliding Windows Selection

Sliding windows have two parts that slide from left to right. On this type of window, the screen is on the outside. They are very common in buildings built in the fifties and are often used as basement windows.

With simple to use mechanism and requiring little long-term maintenance, sliding windows are an economical solution. In addition to being energy-efficient, sliding windows are available in various materials.

Aluminium models that include a row of single glass panes on the inside and double glass panes outside offer a higher level of soundproofing appreciated by people living in areas with heavy traffic.

All current sliding windows have a full or half-width screen. Sliding windows are most often manufactured with two or three panels, but can also be combined with fixed panels.

FAQ

PVC window frames are easy to maintain.

To keep them looking like new as long as possible, just clean them with a little mild soap and water, rinse thoroughly and wipe with a soft cloth.

You should never use an abrasive product, as it can wear away the PVC surface. If your PVC window frames are stained, a mixture of soap, water and washing soda will provide a deeper cleaning action. In the case of stubborn stains, use a “magic eraser” sponge, rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft cloth.

The estimated service life of a window is 15 years; however, some may last for 20 years or more.

Replacing your doors and windows can increase your home’s energy efficiency by up to 25 percent. That’s no small advantage!

Determine the type of windows you’d like to purchase based on the following characteristics:

  • The type of window (stationary or one that opens)
  • The way it opens (with a crank or by sliding)
  • The ease of maintenance (with pivoting panes or 90° casement hinges)
  • The materials used in the frame (PVC, aluminum, wood or a hybrid)
  • The type of glazing (double or triple)
  • The window’s energy efficiency
  • The quality of the installation work (even the best windows, if poorly installed, will fail to live up to their full potential, and their lifespan may be shortened)

Remember that a door and window professional is the ideal person to advise you on the type of product that will best suit your needs, your style and your budget.
